Start Strong

Spring clean up and mulching is mostly behind us now, but a thorough spring clean up is the best way to set your lawn for a great summer. Removing leaves and debris helps avoid bare spots during the growing season and gives your turf a healthy start. Spring clean up is also a time to thatch, aerate, and overseed. From The Ground Guys,.."[Now} is the time to concentrate on lawn recovery to ensure your grass returns with full force next spring. The best methods to accomplish this include dethatching, aerating and seeding your lawn. Once you learn why these steps are important and how to perform them, you’ll ensure a beautiful yard for years to come.

Stay Strong

Once you have the yard cleared, it is time to water and fertilize your lawn. From the DIY Network, “A day or two before applying fertilizer, water your lawn thoroughly. After grass dries, apply fertilizer. Then lightly water again. This second watering is vitally important because it washes fertilizer off grass blades and into the soil. You can also time fertilizer application between rainfalls to let rain wash fertilizer into the soil. Avoid applying fertilizer during a drought when a lawn has browned or withered from lack of moisture.”

After preparation, most lawn owners think about mowing. From Home Guides:

As a rule, only remove one-third of the grass blades during each mowing. Avoid drastically changing the cutting height. Leave grass clippings on the lawn after mowing. The clippings break down into nutrients for the soil, which minimizes the need for additional fertilizers. Use compost to help condition soil for healthy grass and ground cover growth and add microbes that improve nutrient uptake. Use organic fertilizers rather than quick-release synthetic fertilizers.

From Today's Home Owner,

Here’s recommended mowing heights for lawns :

Bahia grass: 2” – 3”

Bentgrass: ¼” – ¾”

Bermuda: ½” – 1½”

Buffalograss: 2” – 3”

Centipede: 1½” – 2½”

Fine fescue: 1½” – 2½”

Kentucky Bluegrass: 1½” – 2½”

Ryegrass: 1½” – 2½”

St. Augustine: 2” – 4”

Tall fescue: 2” – 3”

Zoysia: ½” – 1½”

Watering your lawn is the next phase in a good maintenance routine. To avoid over-watering or under-watering, having a schedule is a great tool. Whether you have an irrigation system or are using sprinklers, we recommend you water in the early morning. We also recommend watering only until moisture reaches the appropriate depth for your type of grass, typically the root depth.

What about my flower beds? What about weeds and pests? What about shrub and tree care?
